After years of courtroom battles, bans, and nonstop tension between two of gaming’s biggest companies, Fortnite is officially returning to app stores globally. Epic Games confirmed the comeback on Tuesday while also taking another public shot at Apple over App Store fees and developer restrictions.
The company sounded unusually confident while discussing the ongoing legal fight, suggesting it believes the situation is finally shifting in its favor. Epic claimed Apple will eventually be forced to become more transparent about the real costs behind its App Store commissions, which have remained one of the biggest arguments in the case since the dispute first exploded back in 2020.
At the center of the entire conflict is Apple’s long-standing practice of taking up to a 30 percent cut from in-app purchases. Epic has repeatedly argued those fees are unfair and anti-competitive, especially for huge games like Fortnite where millions of players buy digital cosmetics, battle passes, and in-game currency every single day.
The Apple Vs Epic Battle Still Isn’t Fully Over
The legal war between the two companies has honestly become one of the biggest tech industry battles of the last decade. What started as a disagreement over payment systems eventually turned into a global debate around app store control, digital monopolies, and how much power companies like Apple should have over developers.
Fortnite was famously removed from Apple’s App Store years ago after Epic intentionally bypassed Apple’s payment system to challenge its policies directly. That move triggered lawsuits almost immediately and kicked off a legal fight that dragged through courts for years. The game eventually returned to the US App Store last year after nearly five years away, but Epic says some restrictions still remain in other regions.
According to the company, Fortnite has still not returned to the Australian App Store because Apple continues enforcing developer rules that courts had previously criticized. Epic clearly wants to keep public pressure on Apple while governments and regulators worldwide continue examining how app store platforms operate.
Fortnite Is Still Huge But Epic Has Been Struggling Too
Even though Fortnite remains one of the most recognizable games on the planet, Epic itself has not been completely untouched by the changing gaming market. Earlier this year, the company reportedly cut more than 1,000 jobs after engagement around Fortnite slowed down during a difficult spending environment for the gaming industry.
That’s a pretty major shift considering Fortnite once felt almost unstoppable culturally. The battle royale game transformed online gaming when it exploded in popularity, becoming more than just a shooter and turning into a digital social platform filled with concerts, movie crossovers, celebrity skins, and live events. Millions of players still log in daily, but the gaming industry overall has cooled down compared to the massive growth period during pandemic years.
Still, Fortnite returning globally to app stores is a huge moment for Epic. Mobile gaming remains one of the biggest revenue generators in the industry, and restoring easier access to the game could help boost engagement again over time.
Epic Is Trying To Turn The Fight Into A Bigger Industry Issue
One thing that stands out is how aggressively Epic keeps framing the lawsuit as something larger than just Fortnite itself. The company continues presenting the fight as a battle for developers everywhere rather than only protecting its own business interests.
Epic’s latest statements suggest it believes regulators and governments may eventually crack down harder on app store commissions and platform control.
