Tensions between Europe and Big Tech escalated sharply this week after French authorities carried out a police raid on the Paris offices of X and summoned Elon Musk to appear before investigators in April.
According to French prosecutors, the move is part of a widening criminal investigation into alleged algorithmic manipulation and data-related violations on the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
What the Investigation Is About
The probe, which began in early 2025, initially focused on complaints that X’s algorithms may have been biased or abused, potentially distorting automated data processing systems on the platform.
Now, the inquiry has expanded to include concerns around Grok, X’s AI chatbot, following fresh complaints about its functioning. Prosecutors confirmed that investigators are examining whether the platform — or its executives — played a role in unlawful data extraction and algorithm misuse.
Serious New Allegations Added
In a significant escalation, French authorities said the investigation will also look into possible complicity in the distribution of sexually explicit deepfakes and the handling of images involving child sexual exploitation, along with violations of image rights.
The Paris prosecutor’s office described the scope as broad, covering several potential criminal offences linked to how content and AI tools are managed on the platform.
Musk and Former CEO Ordered to Testify
Both Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino have been formally summoned to give evidence on April 20. Several other X employees have also been called in as witnesses.
French officials noted that such summons are mandatory under local law, though enforcement can be complex when individuals reside outside France. After the hearings, authorities will decide whether to drop the case or push it forward — potentially including custodial measures.
Musk Pushes Back, Calls It Political
X has not issued an official response to the latest developments. However, Musk previously rejected similar allegations in July, accusing French prosecutors of launching a “politically motivated criminal investigation.”
Prosecutors countered that the investigation is being conducted in a “constructive” manner, with the stated aim of ensuring X complies with French law while operating within national territory.
A Symbolic Break: Prosecutors Leave X
In a striking symbolic move, the Paris prosecutor’s office also announced it is leaving the X platform altogether, stating it will now communicate via LinkedIn and Instagram instead.
The investigation is being led jointly by the prosecutor’s cybercrime unit, French police cybercrime teams, and Europol, underscoring the seriousness of the case.
French lawmaker Eric Bothorel, whose complaint helped trigger the investigation, welcomed the development, saying it reinforced the idea that “no one is above the law” in France.
Final Words
The raid and summons mark one of the most aggressive legal actions yet taken by a European authority against X under Elon Musk’s ownership. As debates over free speech, AI accountability, and platform responsibility deepen, this case could become a defining moment in how Europe confronts powerful tech platforms — and how far Musk is willing to push back.
All eyes now turn to April 20, when Musk is expected to face French prosecutors.
