Big changes may be coming to WhatsApp — at least for Android users.
According to feature tracker reports, the Meta-owned messaging platform is testing a new customization system that could allow users to tweak app themes, icons, and accent colours. The feature has reportedly surfaced in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.6.1.
While it’s still in development and not publicly available yet, the update suggests WhatsApp may soon look very different — depending on how you want it to look.
14 New App Icons Spotted
Based on beta findings, WhatsApp has reportedly added 14 new icon styles.
Seven of them are solid-colour variants:
- Blue
- Brown
- Green
- Monochrome
- Orange
- Pink
- Purple
In addition, seven stylized options have also been spotted:
- Aurora
- Fluffy
- Galaxy
- Clay
- Sparkle
- Neon
These would reportedly allow users to change the WhatsApp icon on their home screen and app drawer — something Android users have typically needed third-party launchers for.
Accent Colour Customisation
Beyond icons, WhatsApp is also said to be testing a feature that lets users change the app’s branding colour.
Reportedly, users may get up to 19 accent colour options, including:
- Default green
- Royal blue
- Violet
- Coral
- Teal
- Brown
- Beige
- Yellow
- Pink
- Red
- Orange
- Dark olive green
There’s also talk of a “classic look” returning — possibly reviving the older WhatsApp design that was phased out years ago.
If implemented, these changes could affect UI elements like:
- Chat filters
- Tabs
- Floating action buttons
- Interface highlights
In short, WhatsApp may finally move toward deeper personalization — something rivals like Telegram and Discord have long offered.
Could This Be A Premium Feature?
According to reports, these customization options may be part of a rumoured WhatsApp premium subscription plan.
WhatsApp has been exploring monetisation beyond business APIs, and a monthly subscription offering enhanced features for regular users could be the next step.
However, it’s important to note:
- The feature is still in development
- It’s only visible in beta builds
- There’s no confirmed rollout timeline
As with most beta discoveries, features can change — or even get scrapped — before official release.
Final Words
WhatsApp has largely kept its interface consistent for years. But this beta update hints at a future where users may finally get more creative control over how the app looks.
Whether it becomes a premium perk or a free update remains to be seen.
But if this rolls out widely, your WhatsApp might soon match your vibe — not just your contacts.
