ByteDance Eyes 100,000 AI Chips in 2026 Push, Talks With Samsung Intensify

China’s tech race just took another sharp turn. ByteDance — the parent company of TikTok — is reportedly stepping deeper into the artificial intelligence hardware game, with ambitious plans to produce at least 100,000 AI chips this year. And if sources are to be believed, negotiations with Samsung Electronics are already in motion.

According to Reuters, the company is building its own AI processor as it looks to reduce dependency on global chip suppliers and secure long-term computing power for its expanding AI ecosystem.

The Big Plan: From Samples to Scale

Sources familiar with the matter claim ByteDance expects to receive sample chips by the end of March. The processor is reportedly designed for AI inference tasks — meaning it would power applications like chatbots, recommendation engines, and content algorithms rather than training massive models from scratch.

Initial production could touch 100,000 units this year, with gradual scaling that may reach up to 350,000 units over time.

If that happens, this would mark a major milestone for ByteDance’s long-running ambition to develop in-house chips — something it has quietly been working on since at least 2022.

Why Samsung Matters

Negotiations with Samsung reportedly include access to high-demand memory chip supplies — a critical component currently under global strain due to the AI infrastructure boom.

With AI servers and data centers consuming enormous volumes of advanced memory, securing that supply chain could be just as important as the processor itself.

Samsung declined to comment. ByteDance, meanwhile, called the details about its in-house chip project “inaccurate,” without further clarification.

The Broader AI Race

ByteDance wouldn’t be alone in this move.

Global tech heavyweights like Google (Alphabet), Amazon, and Microsoft have already developed custom AI chips to reduce reliance on Nvidia — the dominant supplier of AI GPUs.

For Chinese companies, the urgency runs even deeper. U.S. export controls on advanced chips have pushed domestic tech giants to accelerate self-reliance in semiconductor design.

ByteDance has previously worked with U.S.-based Broadcom on an advanced AI processor, with Taiwan’s TSMC reportedly involved in manufacturing plans, as Reuters earlier reported.

Playing Catch-Up in China’s AI Arena

While ByteDance is only now intensifying its chip strategy, rivals are already ahead:

  • Alibaba recently unveiled its Zhenwu chip tailored for large-scale AI workloads.
  • Baidu not only develops chips but also sells them to external clients and plans to list its chip arm, Kunlunxin.

ByteDance’s internal chip project, reportedly codenamed “SeedChip,” is tied to a larger AI transformation strategy. The company founded its AI model division “Seed” in 2023 and has been investing heavily in large language models and AI-driven services.

Its AI portfolio spans:

  • Short-video platforms
  • E-commerce
  • Enterprise cloud services
  • AI chatbots like Doubao and its overseas version, Dola

Billions on the Line

One source told Reuters that ByteDance plans to spend more than 160 billion yuan (around $22 billion) on AI-related procurement this year.

More than half of that budget is reportedly earmarked for purchasing Nvidia chips — including high-end H200 models — while also advancing its in-house chip development.

At a January all-hands meeting, executive Zhao Qi reportedly told employees that AI investment would benefit every division within the company. While acknowledging that ByteDance’s models currently trail behind global leaders like OpenAI, he reportedly emphasized that AI development remains a top priority.

Final Words

ByteDance’s chip ambitions signal something bigger than just hardware — it’s about control, resilience, and long-term dominance in an AI-driven world.

With geopolitical pressure mounting and the AI arms race accelerating, tech companies can no longer rely solely on external suppliers. Whether ByteDance’s chip project succeeds at scale remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the company is betting heavily that AI will define its next decade.
