OnePlus is officially stepping away from launching new smartphones in the United States and Europe, marking one of the biggest changes in the brand’s history. The announcement, made jointly with Oppo, signals a strategic shift that will see OnePlus’ technology and product philosophy integrated more closely with its parent company. While the companies have not clarified which markets OnePlus will focus on in the future, the decision effectively ends new device launches across two of its most important regions.
The move follows years of speculation about the brand’s direction, particularly after delays surrounding the OnePlus Open 2 foldable and the growing overlap between OnePlus and Oppo’s smartphone portfolios. With both companies already sharing hardware, software, and engineering resources, the latest announcement further strengthens their integration.
OnePlus shifts focus as Oppo takes the lead
According to Oppo, the decision forms part of a new strategic direction aimed at combining the strengths of both brands. The company said OnePlus’ technologies, product expertise, and design philosophy will become more deeply integrated into Oppo’s future plans.
The announcement also comes after OnePlus co-founder Peter Lau returned to Oppo as its Chief Product Officer, reinforcing the increasingly close relationship between the two companies. Over the years, OnePlus and Oppo have shared manufacturing, software development, supply chains, and even launched similar smartphones under different branding in various markets.
Although Oppo enjoys strong recognition in several Asian markets, OnePlus has traditionally maintained a stronger presence among technology enthusiasts in North America and Europe. The decision therefore represents a significant shift for long-time customers who have followed the brand since its launch.
Existing OnePlus phones will continue to receive support
For current OnePlus users, the companies have confirmed that existing devices will continue receiving after-sales service and software support. Oppo stated that customer rights will remain protected, including warranty coverage, maintenance services, and future software updates.
One of the biggest changes will involve software. Oppo announced that ColorOS will gradually replace OxygenOS on OnePlus smartphones across Europe and North America in the coming months. The move brings OnePlus devices even closer to Oppo’s broader ecosystem, reflecting the companies’ continued software integration.
While the software transition may represent a major change for long-time OnePlus users, Oppo emphasized that existing support channels will remain available after the transition.
Oppo remains committed to Europe
Despite OnePlus ending new launches in Western markets, Oppo insists it is not abandoning Europe. Elvis Zhou, CEO of Oppo Europe, described the region as a “key market” for the company and said Oppo is actively strengthening its local operations.
The company recently expanded its online retail presence in the United Kingdom, offering a wider range of products through its official store. Oppo also plans to place greater emphasis on bringing flagship smartphones to European consumers, following the launch of devices such as the Find X9 Ultra.
At this stage, Oppo has not indicated any plans to significantly expand its smartphone business in the United States. Instead, the latest announcement reflects a broader restructuring in which Oppo will take a more prominent role internationally while OnePlus gradually steps back from new product launches in North America and Europe.
Although the announcement marks the end of an era for many OnePlus fans, the company has reassured existing customers that their devices will continue to be supported. The long-term future of the OnePlus brand outside these regions remains uncertain, but its technology and legacy are set to live on through Oppo’s expanding global smartphone strategy.
