Microsoft has taken a big swing at the growing AI PC market with the unveiling of the Surface Laptop Ultra, a machine the company describes as its most powerful Surface device ever. Rather than focusing on traditional productivity upgrades, Microsoft is betting heavily on artificial intelligence, advanced creative workloads, and workstation-level performance. The new laptop arrives through a collaboration with Nvidia and introduces technology that has never appeared in a Surface product before.
The announcement comes at a time when major tech companies are racing to build computers capable of handling AI tasks directly on-device. While cloud-based AI remains important, Microsoft believes many creators, developers, and researchers want powerful local computing capabilities. That idea sits at the center of the Surface Laptop Ultra, which is built to run demanding applications without depending entirely on remote servers.
Nvidia’s RTX Spark Platform Takes Surface Into Workstation Territory
The biggest attraction is Nvidia’s new RTX Spark superchip. The platform combines a Blackwell RTX GPU with a 20-core Nvidia Grace CPU, creating a system designed specifically for next-generation AI workloads. Nvidia says the chip includes 6,144 CUDA cores and fifth-generation Tensor cores, allowing the laptop to deliver up to one petaflop of AI computing performance.
Microsoft says users can run local AI models with up to 120 billion parameters, making the device suitable for developers, machine learning engineers, software creators, and professionals working with large datasets. The laptop is also the first Surface device to feature full CUDA support, a major addition for users who rely on Nvidia’s ecosystem for AI development, rendering, simulation work, and accelerated computing tasks.
One of the standout specifications is support for up to 128GB of unified memory. The system can intelligently allocate memory resources between the CPU and GPU depending on workload demands. This gives the Surface Laptop Ultra capabilities that move well beyond a traditional premium laptop and closer to what many users expect from a professional workstation.
Brightest Surface Display Ever and Premium Hardware Features
Microsoft has equipped the Surface Laptop Ultra with a 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen display that reaches up to 2,000 nits of HDR brightness. The company claims this is the brightest screen ever featured on a Surface device. The panel offers a pixel density of 262ppi and is designed to provide highly accurate color reproduction, making it appealing for video editors, photographers, designers, and content creators.
Keeping such powerful hardware cool is a challenge, and Microsoft says the new thermal system delivers up to 2.5 times the cooling capacity of the 15-inch Surface Laptop (7th Edition). The laptop also includes a generous range of connectivity options, including HDMI, USB Type-C ports, a USB Type-A port, an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. These additions make it easier for professionals to connect cameras, monitors, storage devices, and other accessories without carrying multiple adapters.
The Surface Laptop Ultra also features Microsoft’s largest haptic touchpad to date, Windows Hello facial recognition support, and a repair-focused internal design that allows replacement parts to be purchased when needed. Microsoft has confirmed that the laptop will launch later this year in Platinum and Nightfall color options.
