Samsung is rolling out one of the biggest software upgrades yet for its Samsung Bespoke AI Refrigerator series, and surprisingly, this update might finally make AI-powered fridges feel genuinely practical instead of just futuristic gimmicks.
The company has upgraded the Bespoke refrigerator lineup with deeper AI integration powered by Google’s Gemini models. By combining Samsung’s existing on-device object recognition with cloud-based AI processing, the refrigerator can now reportedly identify more than 2,000 food items — a massive jump from the roughly 100 products the system previously recognized.
Samsung’s older AI food tracking system could already recognize common fruits, vegetables, and packaged goods, but users often had to manually input details such as quantities or when groceries were added. According to reports, the new update significantly reduces that friction by improving automatic recognition and smarter grocery management.
The upgraded AI Food Manager can now identify far more niche ingredients and branded products. Reports mention the system successfully recognizing items like Bull Head Shallot Sauce, a relatively uncommon Taiwanese ingredient, while also distinguishing between similar beverages such as Diet Coke and Coke Zero. The refrigerator can even count multiple items more accurately to improve inventory tracking.
Samsung has also expanded voice controls inside the Bespoke AI Refrigerator lineup. Users can now reportedly ask the fridge to adjust settings, check maintenance information like water filter replacement timing, and even troubleshoot issues through AI-powered assistance. In some cases, the fridge can display tutorials showing users how to fix certain problems themselves.
One of the most ambitious additions is a new system called “Reliability AI.” Samsung says this feature monitors the refrigerator’s internal components and helps identify possible faults before they become serious. The company also claims support agents may be able to remotely diagnose or solve some issues without sending technicians to a customer’s home.
For example, if an ice maker starts producing clumped ice cubes because of excess water, Samsung says technicians could theoretically adjust the water settings remotely after reviewing diagnostic information. The company emphasized that users must provide explicit consent before repair staff can access appliance data.
The AI improvements also extend into daily grocery management. The refrigerator can reportedly track how long foods like avocados have been stored and notify users when products may be approaching expiration. It can also learn shopping habits by noticing frequently removed items and suggesting additions to grocery lists automatically.
However, the AI system still isn’t perfect. Like many modern AI tools, Samsung’s software can occasionally hallucinate or misidentify objects. One reported example involved the refrigerator labeling a colorful bandage on someone’s finger as a vegetable while scanning the fridge contents. Other times, the AI reportedly guesses incomplete product names instead of identifying items fully accurately.
Even with those limitations, the update represents one of Samsung’s clearest attempts yet to turn AI into a genuinely useful household tool instead of a flashy demo feature. The company appears to be positioning the Bespoke AI Refrigerator as part of a broader smart-home ecosystem where AI quietly helps users manage groceries, appliance maintenance, and meal planning with minimal manual effort.
