Australia has secured its biggest defence export agreement ever after signing a major radar technology deal with Canada worth A$2.5 billion. The agreement will see Australia provide its advanced Over-the-Horizon Radar technology to support Canada’s growing efforts to monitor activity across the Arctic region. Beyond the financial value of the deal, the partnership highlights how Arctic security is becoming an increasingly important priority for Western allies amid rising geopolitical tensions.
The announcement marks a significant moment for Australia’s defence industry, which has been looking to expand its role in the global security market. Officials from both countries described the agreement as more than just a technology sale, suggesting it could pave the way for deeper defence cooperation in the years ahead. Australia Exports Advanced Missile Detection Technology
At the center of the agreement is Australia’s Over-the-Horizon Radar capability, a system designed to detect and track targets at extremely long distances. Unlike conventional radar systems that are limited by the Earth’s curvature, this technology can monitor aircraft, ships, and even missile activity thousands of kilometers away by using high-frequency radio waves.
Australia’s existing Jindalee Operational Radar Network, often referred to as JORN, is among the most sophisticated systems of its kind. The network can reportedly detect and monitor objects up to 3,000 kilometers away, giving military planners early warning capabilities across vast areas. Such technology has become increasingly valuable as countries seek better surveillance of remote regions where traditional monitoring infrastructure is limited.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the agreement as an important step for Australia’s defence sector. He said, “Today’s agreement marks a significant milestone in Australian defence trade and lays the foundation for deeper and mutually beneficial defence industry collaboration with Canada.”
The deal is also expected to generate economic benefits at home. Australian officials estimate the project will support around 300 jobs, adding to the country’s growing defence manufacturing and technology sectors. For Canberra, the agreement demonstrates how locally developed military technologies can compete in international markets.
Why Canada Is Investing In Arctic Surveillance
Canada’s interest in the radar system is closely tied to the strategic importance of its Arctic territory. Fuhr added, “This project is part of a broader effort to build an integrated Arctic surveillance and communications network that will strengthen Canada’s ability to monitor, understand and respond to activity in the Arctic.”

While the radar agreement itself is substantial, officials from both countries have indicated that it represents only the first stage of a broader collaboration. Future cooperation could include additional technology sharing, industrial partnerships, and joint development opportunities linked to advanced surveillance systems.
The timing is also notable. Countries across North America, Europe, and the Indo-Pacific are increasing investments in defence technologies as global security challenges continue evolving. Long-range radar systems have become particularly important because they provide early warning against aircraft, missile launches, and maritime activity, helping military forces respond more effectively to potential threats.
For Australia, the deal strengthens its reputation as an emerging exporter of advanced defence technology rather than simply a purchaser of foreign systems.
