Meta Platforms has quietly announced a price hike for its Quest VR headsets in the US, and the timing says a lot about where the tech industry is heading right now. Starting April 19, buying into Meta’s virtual world is going to cost noticeably more.
The entry-level Quest 3S, which earlier sat at $299, now jumps to $349.99. The higher-end Quest 3 with 512GB storage? That one sees a sharper bump, going up by $100 to $599.99. Even the mid-tier 256GB version isn’t spared, now priced at $449.99.
On paper, it looks like a simple price revision. But the bigger story sits behind it.
Memory chips — the backbone of devices like VR headsets — are suddenly in high demand. And not because of gaming or consumer tech. The real pressure is coming from artificial intelligence. Companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are aggressively building AI infrastructure, which eats up massive amounts of these components.
Manufacturers, naturally, are prioritizing where the bigger money is — data centers over consumer gadgets. And that shift is now hitting everyday products.
Meta isn’t alone here. Brands like Dell and HP have already raised prices on their devices. Even Sony recently pushed up the cost of its PlayStation 5 again, showing this isn’t an isolated move — it’s an industry-wide trend.
But Meta’s situation has another layer.
For years, the company poured billions into building the metaverse through its Reality Labs division. That big bet hasn’t exactly paid off yet. Losses have crossed $70 billion, and earlier this year, Meta even cut around 10% of jobs in that unit. There’s also been a visible slowdown in projects like Horizon Worlds.
Now, the shift feels clearer.
While VR is still part of the plan, Meta seems to be leaning harder into AI — the same space that’s indirectly making its hardware more expensive. It’s a bit ironic. The tech that’s shaping the future is also making current devices harder to afford.
