While everyone’s watching electric cars and robots, something else is quietly cooking inside Tesla — and it’s big.

The company has started hiring semiconductor engineers in Taiwan, and not just a couple of roles. Around nine positions have popped up, all tied to something called “Terafab.” Sounds technical, but what it really means is Tesla is trying to build its own full-stack chip factory for AI.

And the location? That’s not random.

Taiwan is basically the heart of global chipmaking. It’s home to TSMC, the company that produces the world’s most advanced chips. If you want top-tier semiconductor talent, this is where you go.

The job listings themselves give away more than Tesla officially has.

Terafab is being described as a “vertically integrated” chip facility — meaning everything from design to production to packaging happens under one roof. That’s a huge ambition. Most companies don’t even try to control that entire chain.

And Tesla isn’t looking for beginners either. These roles demand serious experience — advanced chipmaking below 7nm, even touching 2nm-level tech, which is cutting-edge territory right now. There’s also mention of advanced packaging systems like CoWoS and SoIC, areas where TSMC already dominates.

So yeah, this isn’t some experimental side project. This is Tesla going deep into hardcore semiconductor territory.

The bigger picture connects straight to Elon Musk’s recent push into AI. Just last month, he revealed Terafab as part of a plan to power everything from robotics to massive data centers. Think self-driving, humanoid robots, AI infrastructure — all needing serious compute power.

And instead of relying fully on external suppliers, Tesla seems to be moving toward building its own chips.

That’s a bold move, but also risky.

Even TSMC, the industry leader, made it clear — there are no shortcuts here. Building a semiconductor fab takes years, not months. And the competition is already intense, with companies racing to secure limited chip capacity as AI demand explodes.

Still, Tesla stepping into this space shows how much the game is changing.

Cars were just the beginning. Now it’s about controlling the tech behind intelligence itself — and chips sit right at the center of that fight.
