The artificial intelligence race could be heading into a new phase as Nvidia and OpenAI reportedly discuss one of the largest AI infrastructure agreements ever proposed. According to a report, the chip giant is in talks to provide financing guarantees worth around $250 billion for OpenAI’s planned data centre expansion in the United States. If completed, the arrangement would represent a significant step toward OpenAI building and controlling more of its own computing infrastructure instead of relying heavily on cloud providers.
The reported discussions also highlight how rapidly AI companies are scaling their ambitions. Rather than leasing computing power from existing cloud platforms alone, leading AI developers are increasingly exploring dedicated infrastructure capable of supporting future generations of advanced AI models.
Nvidia Could Help Back OpenAI’s Massive Ohio AI Campus
According to the report, Nvidia is considering providing financing guarantees that would help OpenAI lease a 10-gigawatt data centre project being developed in southern Ohio by an energy subsidiary of SoftBank. The overall development is expected to cost more than $500 billion, making it one of the most ambitious AI infrastructure projects ever proposed.
The reported $250 billion guarantee would primarily support the project’s lease obligations and debt financing. However, it would reportedly not include the cost of Nvidia’s AI chips that will power the facility. The report also states that Nvidia has separately discussed helping finance OpenAI’s future chip purchases, which could reportedly be worth as much as $350 billion.
For Nvidia, such an arrangement would help secure long-term demand for its AI accelerators, which remain the industry’s preferred hardware for training and running large language models. For OpenAI, the project could provide greater independence by reducing its dependence on external cloud infrastructure supplied by companies such as Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle.
Why the Project Matters for the AI Industry
Artificial intelligence models continue to grow in size and complexity, requiring enormous amounts of computing power and electricity. Building dedicated AI campuses allows companies to optimise performance while reducing long-term operating costs compared with continually renting capacity from third-party providers.
The Ohio facility is reportedly planned to be completed in phases, with the first stage expected to come online in 2028. That initial phase is expected to deliver approximately 800 megawatts of computing power before expanding further toward the project’s planned 10-gigawatt capacity.
The report also claims that power allocation for the site involves the U.S. government and is linked to a recent trade agreement with Japan. Under that arrangement, Japan has reportedly committed funding toward a natural gas power plant supporting the broader infrastructure initiative. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is reportedly involved in determining which companies receive access to the project’s power resources.
Neither Nvidia nor OpenAI had publicly commented on the reported discussions at the time of publication. Reuters also noted that it was unable to independently verify the report.
AI Infrastructure Spending Continues to Accelerate
OpenAI is reportedly among the companies showing the strongest interest in leasing capacity at the Ohio site. The report adds that Anthropic, Microsoft and Google have also reportedly held discussions regarding potential access to the project’s computing resources, underlining the growing demand for large-scale AI infrastructure.
