Your crypto posts on X might soon get smarter.
X (formerly Twitter) is testing a new feature called Smart Cashtags, which will allow users to display live price data for cryptocurrencies and other digital assets directly inside posts.
The move signals X’s growing focus on becoming a real-time financial information hub.
What Are Smart Cashtags?
The feature was revealed by Nikita Bier, Head of Product at X, who described the platform as one of the most influential sources for financial news. According to him, massive sums of money are deployed daily based on conversations happening on X — and Smart Cashtags aim to make that information more actionable.
Here’s how it works:
- Users type a dollar sign ($) followed by a ticker symbol
- For example: $BTC or $ETH
- The platform automatically converts it into a “Smart Cashtag”
Once the post goes live, readers will see an interactive ticker that displays real-time pricing data. Clicking it will show updated market value and related discussions about that asset.
The feature is designed to support leading cryptocurrencies, smart contracts, and other digital assets.
Information-Only — No Trading
Importantly, Smart Cashtags will not allow users to trade directly on the platform.
This is purely an informational tool — designed to help users quickly check price fluctuations while reading financial commentary or trading advice.
The team is currently gathering feedback during internal testing, and a public rollout is expected as early as next month.
Bigger Financial Ambitions at X
The update aligns with broader moves under Elon Musk’s leadership. During a recent internal meeting at xAI, Elon Musk reportedly discussed progress on X Money, the company’s in-house payments system.
X Money is expected to roll out to a limited group of users in the coming months, though it’s still unclear whether it will integrate cryptocurrency functionality.
The direction is clear: X wants to evolve beyond a social media platform and become a financial infrastructure layer as well.
Final Words
Smart Cashtags may seem like a small feature, but they signal something bigger.
By embedding real-time crypto data directly into conversations, X is tightening its grip on financial discourse online. While it won’t replace trading apps, it could make the platform even more central to how retail investors consume market updates.
In a world where markets move by the second, live data inside your feed might just be the next big shift.
