The electric SUV battle in the United States is about to get a lot more interesting. Rivian is preparing to officially launch the highly anticipated R2, a vehicle that many industry watchers believe could become the company’s most important product yet. Ahead of the first customer deliveries, newly published EPA ratings suggest Rivian may have gained an unexpected advantage over one of the segment’s biggest players, Tesla’s Model Y.
The timing couldn’t be better for Rivian. With competition intensifying across the EV market and buyers becoming increasingly focused on range and efficiency, the company now enters the spotlight with numbers that are likely to turn heads. According to the latest government ratings, the R2 not only delivers strong efficiency figures but also manages to travel farther on a charge than the latest Tesla Model Y despite being significantly larger.
Rivian R2 Beats Tesla Model Y In EPA Range Ratings
According to final ratings published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Rivian R2 Performance AWD equipped with 21-inch wheels delivers an estimated range of 330 miles on a full charge. The electric SUV also achieves a combined efficiency rating of 105 MPGe, putting it among the stronger performers in its category.
For comparison, the 2026 Tesla Model Y AWD has received an EPA-rated range of 306 miles while posting the same combined efficiency rating of 105 MPGe. While both vehicles appear equally efficient on paper, Rivian’s ability to squeeze out additional range has attracted attention throughout the EV industry.
The result becomes even more impressive when considering the physical differences between the two vehicles. The R2 is reportedly around 800 pounds heavier than the Model Y and features a taller, boxier design. Traditionally, extra weight and reduced aerodynamics tend to have a negative impact on range figures, making Rivian’s performance all the more noteworthy.
Not every version of the R2 reaches the 330-mile mark, however. Buyers choosing the more rugged 20-inch all-terrain wheel package will see a reduction in range. That configuration is rated at 307 miles with a combined efficiency rating of 99 MPGe. While slightly lower, those numbers still place it firmly within the competitive range expected by modern EV buyers.
Deliveries Begin Soon As Rivian Expands Its Mainstream Push
Rivian has confirmed that June 9 will mark a major milestone for the company. On that date, it plans to begin sending order invitations, offering demonstration drives and completing the first customer deliveries of the R2. The launch represents a crucial moment as Rivian looks to expand beyond its premium R1 lineup and reach a broader audience.
The company has already opened configuration selections on its website, allowing reservation holders to customize their preferred R2 models. Existing owners of Rivian’s R1 vehicles are expected to receive priority access, although the automaker has also indicated that some early production slots will be distributed through a randomized selection process among reservation holders.
Customers who receive an invitation and complete their orders can reportedly expect delivery within two to six weeks. That timeline could make the R2 one of the fastest ways for buyers to get into a new electric SUV at a time when some manufacturers continue facing extended wait periods.
Industry analysts have been watching the R2 closely because it is widely viewed as Rivian’s opportunity to move into the high-volume portion of the EV market. Unlike the larger and more expensive R1T pickup and R1S SUV, the R2 is positioned as a more accessible product aimed at competing directly with mainstream electric crossovers.
With impressive range numbers, competitive efficiency ratings and growing consumer interest, Rivian’s newest SUV is entering the market with significant momentum. Whether it can challenge Tesla’s dominance remains to be seen, but the early EPA figures suggest the battle is about to become far more competitive than many expected.
